Iya Valley
Japan's Undiscovered Region

Iya Valley is a tourism bureau specializing in the western part of Tokushima prefecture in Shikoku. This area, surrounded by high mountains around the Iya Valley, is called “Japan’s Unexplored Region”. The Iya Valley's location deep in the mountains of Shikoku has kept it far off the beaten path, rewarding those who come with unspoiled natural scenery, narrow river gorges, rustic vine bridges and relaxing hot springs. Visitors will experience a unique part of Japan that combines great natural beauty with exciting activity options such as white-water rafting, skiing, hiking and more.

Guided tours are plenty, including river touring by kayak, visiting rustic towns on bicycle, or partaking in a culinary meal with locals. Post-touring can include tasting the world-renowned sake brands from this region.

Located deep in the heart of Shikoku Island, the secluded valley is characterized by steep mountain slopes and deep rocky gorges, which were traditionally crossed by vine bridges. Three of the vine bridges, Iya Kazurabashi and the Oku-Iya Kazurabashi bridges, are maintained to this day and remain some of the most popular attractions of the area. At Oboke Gorge, visitors can cruise gently down the river on pleasure boats, admire the emerald waters and the steep, rocky cliffs towering above. In the warmer months, whitewater rafting further upstream is a popular pastime for those seeking a thrilling adventure.
